The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) said on Monday that it was not interested in suppressing press freedom, but properly guiding the press to spread information and fight the rise of fake news.

Driving the news: Alarms were raised last week following the rumored arrest of two Channels TV presenters by the Department of State Services (DSS) after they interviewed Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State. The NBC later clarified that they were only invited for a meeting and a DSS spokesman called the report fake news.

What the NBC is saying: NBC Director-General, Balarabe Ilelah, accused Channels TV of violating six of its codes.

“We are going to keep on fighting people that are spreading fake news, the commission will not be scared and will keep on summoning anyone who goes contrary to NBC code,” Illelah said.

“Our duty is to make sure that everybody is given a fair playing ground so that you can say whatever you want to say that is according to the law.”
