Pope Francis has endorsed civil unions for same-sex couples, a documentary that premiered at the Rome Film Festival revealed on Wednesday. The pope was quoted to have said, “Homosexuals have a right to be a part of the family. They’re children of God and have a right to a family. Nobody should be thrown out, or be made miserable because of it.”
Why this matters: This cuts against the Catholic church’s long-standing teachings which explicitly permit only the union of man and woman whether in civil, legal or church sacramental unions. As noted by American broadcaster and theologian, Albert Mohler, the Pope’s statement “will weaken Christian witness to marriage & sexuality & gender according to God’s will and God’s Word.”
