Pope Francis declared Monday that the Roman Catholic Church cannot bless same-sex unions because God “cannot bless sin.” The two-page decree issued by the Vatican distinguished between the church’s welcoming and blessing of gay people, which it upheld, but not their unions.
Why this matters? In October 2020, reports filtered in that Pope Francis was in support of homosexual unions, after a documentary surfaced where he was quoted to have said that “Homosexuals have a right to be a part of the family.” However, this new statement is bound to attract criticisms from progressives who were hoping Francis would redirect the church’s over 2000 years teaching on marriage.
